How to Maintain Smart Film Glass (and Make It Last 15+ Years)
Simple care rules that keep PDLC film performing like new - and the mistakes that kill cheap film early.
Daily cleaning
Clean the film like ordinary glass: a soft cloth with water or mild soapy water. Do not use abrasives, ammonia-heavy cleaners or hard scrubbing pads - the PET surface is tough but not scratch-proof.
Duty cycle facts
The film draws power only in the clear state (~5 W/m²). Leaving windows frosted saves energy and does not shorten life - the film is rated for 15+ years and hundreds of thousands of switching cycles either way.
Climate limits
PDLC film operates from -30°C to 70°C. Within that range, heat and cold do not degrade it. PNLC operates from -10°C to 60°C. Outside those ranges, contact us for a suitable solution.
Electrical care
- Keep transformers dry and accessible
- Do not repeatedly yank or bend the busbar lead - the factory tape seal protects it
- If a zone stops switching, check the transformer before suspecting the film
What voids the 2-year warranty
Unauthorized cutting of the busbar edge, applying the film to wet or failing glass, and third-party modification of the wiring. Ordered pieces are batch-traceable from ITO coating onward - keep your order number for validation.

See the film switch
An SGV install switching between transparent and frosted - the film this article talks about.
- Under 0.1 s switching - clear to frosted the instant power changes
- ~5 W per m² - less power than a light bulb, only while clear
- Factory-cut to size - busbar finished and tested, ready to wire
